SRO Advocate
(Full Time – 40 hours/week)
The Mission Neighborhood Resource Center’s community programs aim to support homeless and marginally housed residents of the Mission District to make positive change in their lives and in their communities through participation in social, cultural, educational, recreational, spiritual and civic activities.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Mission SRO Collaborative is a partnership between MNRC, Dolores Street Community Services and St. Peter’s Housing Committee which works with SRO tenants to improve conditions of life in the SRO hotels of the Mission District. The SRO Advocate will work primarily to conduct community organizing, educational activities, and social programs with SRO tenants. The SRO Advocate will coordinate a team of SRO tenants to do outreach and activities in the hotels, including fire prevention and disaster preparedness workshops in coordination with relevant agencies and City departments.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The SRO Advocate reports directly to the MNRC Community Programs Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the SRO Collaborative Peer Outreach Program (POP). Recruit SRO tenants to participate in the peer outreach training program. Provide day-to-day supervision and support to POP participants. Conduct skills-building and leadership development trainings for POP participants. Coordinate regular POP meetings and outreach schedules.
- Coordinate outreach to SRO tenants in their hotels, at MNRC, and in the community. Notify SRO tenants of activities or events, recruit participants, and raise awareness about the services and programs of the SRO Collaborative and MNRC. Create outreach plan and conduct outreach with POP participants. Assure proper documentation and follow-up from outreach.
- Conduct community organizing activities with SRO tenants. Develop campaigns to address issues affecting SRO tenants or homeless communities. Identify and prioritize issues with SRO tenant community. Research campaigns and implement actions. Build relationships with allies and coalitions.
- Organize educational activities including fire prevention and disaster preparedness workshops in SRO hotels. Collaborate with relevant agencies and City departments including the San Francisco Fire Department and the American Red Cross. Assure proper communication, documentation, and follow-up with agencies and departments.
- Organize social programs with SRO tenants including cultural, recreational, spiritual and civic activities. Engage SRO tenant participation in all aspects of planning, design, implementation and evaluation of social programs.
- Provide referrals and linkages to social services, housing and other critical resources. Maintain familiarity and working relationships with City agencies, community and neighborhood groups, and social service organizations that work with SRO tenants.
- Participate in weekly meetings with staff from the Collaborative agencies. Represent the Mission SRO Collaborative and the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center at relevant community, city or neighborhood meetings.
- Assist with evaluation, data collection, reporting, and tracking expenditures of MNRC community programs. Document attendance and participation in all programs and activities. Evaluate programs on a regular basis.
- Maintain effective communication with supervisors, co-workers and collaborative partners. Participate in individual supervision and staff meetings. Develop and evaluate work plans on a regular basis.
- Assist in ordering, delivery, pick-up and stocking of program supplies for MNRC community programs. Procure donations of program supplies when appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Community spirited individual who understands the challenges and possibilities involved in working with homeless and marginally housed communities.
- Bilingual English-Spanish with community organizing or community education experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of harm reduction principles preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
- Ability to work with de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution and crisis response.
- Ability to work professionally and ethically in a multi-cultural team setting, including ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
